What do cypress trees smell like
Harvesting of the sprouts and young branches from the tree tops occurs initially approximately 5 years after planting, allowing regeneration of the plant and continuing annually during its long lifespan. The Spanish oils from Catalonia have a similar odour profile to the French cypress oils as their higher cedrol content gives a woodier character to their fragrance.
Oils from Murcia are lower in cedrol and therefore more terpenic or pine-like. Variability in aroma of cypress essential oils from different localities comes about as a result of factors such as distillation method, soil type or season of harvest. The aroma of cypress can be described as fresh, lingering, pine-like, resinous, slightly smoky with a sweet, balsamic undertone.
It acts as a top to middle note and equaliser in a composition, adding harmony and smoothing out rough edges in a blend. It blends favourably with cedarwood, chamomile, clary sage, lavender, pine, ylang ylang, labdanum, black pepper, benzoin, ginger, juniper, sandalwood and most citrus essential oils. In perfumery cypress is utilised in chypres, fougeres, amber accords and colognes. Like cedarwood Atlas, its virile character makes cypress a popular choice in men's fragrances.

Jan 15, Lots of great responses here--to my nose cypress is a woody piney smell, more herbaceous and oily, a bit like a cross between fresh-cut pine wood and rosemary. I don't necessarily get a clean vibe from it, but it is definitely an uplifting scent, and a little goes a long way.
Jun 29, Old thread, but adding to the pile: There are different types of cypresses, and also the different ratio of branch:leaves when distilling can make a huge difference. Two that I have, French wild-harvested and Spanish cultivated both Cupressus sempervirens , are very different from each other. The French is more earthy, woodsy, darker and deeper, with an almost ashy-resinous quality. It is green and aromatic, and relatively long lasting. The Spanish is much more vibrantly bright, leafy, and camphorous, with a more lemony and airy topnote and not as long lasting.
Arctander mentions that special high-boiling fractions of Cypress "partially deterpenized" as he calls them have pronounced amber quality. Close by is Hinoki Chamaecyparis obtusa which is worth evaluating in parallel. Hinoki wood is a bit more buttery and rich than cypress which is more sharp. I love all conifers, but in the following order. Fir, spruce, pine, cypress, juniper, cedar. And, I've really enjoyed reading this thread and all the takes on cypress Post reply.
