Now look at what righteous Joshua and Caleb did and said to convince the people to go into the land. In Numbers they rent their clothes and spoke of the good things of the land and how the Lord would deliver the land into their hand. They said those inhabitants of the land are "as bread for us. Finally, see what God has to say about the ten evil spies who swayed the Israelites from going into their inherited land.

In Numbers , God said they brought up slander upon the land. Slander is falsehood, or defaming statements to convince others something is bad. They only said bad things about the inhabitants of the land, and the only thing they mentioned was their size. They never said the land was bad or the food or water was bad, just the people's size.

This was slanderous and false according to God especially when they said we were as grasshoppers to them. The people who believed them weren't allowed to inherit the land, and the evil spies died by the plague before the LORD.

It's funny that many readers chose to believe what the evil spies reported just like the children of Israel did back then about the size of the giants. Sure they may have been big men, but according to God, when it gets out of hand it's slanderous and comes with consequences.

Could it be that this number, Ells, was falsely grafted into Enoch to discredit it? Enoch Chapter 1 verse 9 is used to support Jude verses 14 and Jesus Christ would never use a pagan work to support His word. Actually there are several references in the Bible to pagan works. One thing that I think it is important to keep in mind is that the book of Enoch we have today was not written by the Enoch you refer to. The best evidence using the same methods we use to confirm the early dating of the Gospels shows that the oldest portions of 1 Enoch were written around BC.

Long after Enoch was taken up to heaven. The book uses his name and may contain a tradition of some of his sayings but does not date from his time. I think it is more in the literal sense. Then only one could explain the giant ancient ruins that we find- a 10 footer cannot do this. Also, the giant skeletons found under mounds all over the world towards the late 18th century.

Og's bed size suggests he was the same or slightly larger. It could very well be that this height would have bee common for Biblical giants. That, however, is orders of magnitude different from 40 or feet. My goal was not to speculate on the heights, but to look at the specific data and see where that led.

It leads to men that were 3 to 6 feet taller than the average person at the time. That seems to me to very reasonably qualify as giant by any standard. A person doesn't have to get too large before it is simply impossible for him to even roll over, much less stand up. He would die long before reaching feet in height.

Over the past couple weeks I have talked to multiple people who were curious about the height of the giants in the Bible.

I am not going to take the time to deal with all of that, but given all the misinformation I did think it might be helpful to answer the basic question about their height. Internet references vary widely in their claims but many of them are in the 20 to 30 foot range, and several have heights up to feet tall!

Since the Bible is often used to provide support for the idea that these giants existed, I would like to look at what the Bible actually says about the height of the ancient giants. The Bible does record that giants existed in the ancient world and mentions them in several places.

Most of these references do not provide exact height dimensions but describe people of great size and power. A typical example is the report of the spies who were sent to scout the land in Numbers 13 who said,. And there we saw the Nephilim the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim , and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.

While clearly references to very large and powerful people, it is not necessary for us to assume that these are literal proportions. It is far more likely that this is figurative language. The point is that they were very large and not that they were actually as tall as trees or could squash normal men under their feet. We can be confident that this is figurative language because there are a few places in the Bible where we are given size dimensions for those who are called giants.

Although still remarkably large, they are nowhere as large as some of the internet sources claim. The Bible does not refer to this man specifically as a giant, however, he is given special attention as a result of his uncommon height.

Of course, the most famous giant is Goliath of Gath 2 Samuel In 1 Samuel we are told exactly how tall he is. Most translations follow the Hebrew Masoretic text for this verse which reads, "And there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

Interestingly, even this height is challenged because there are variant readings of this verse. In any case, Goliath is between 7 and 10 feet tall. This is a big man, but nowhere near 20 or 30, let alone feet! Perhaps even more remarkable than Goliath, however, is the giant named Og who was king of Bashan and likely the tallest man mentioned in the Bible.

The Book of Deuteronomy records the following:. Behold, his bed was a bed of iron. Is it not in Rabbah of the Ammonites? If we assume that the king had a bed that fit him comfortably, it seems reasonable that he was likely between 10 and 12 feet tall.
